Are you looking for a way to learn more about the theory and history of archival and special collections work and to discuss your ideas? If so, please come and join fellow SAA members on Wednesday, February 17th from 6:30-7:30pm in GSLIS Room 109 for the first meeting of our new journal club focused on archives and special collections.

For the first meeting we’ll be discussing Heather MacNeil’s article “Trusting Description: Authenticity, Accountability, and Archival Description Standards.” We plan on meeting every other week at the same time and place and rotating who gets to pick the article for discussion. So if you have an article you are burning to discuss with your peers, come to the meeting and sign up for a week to lead discussion!

When: Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
Where: GSLIS Room 109
What time: 6:30-7:30pm

Heather MacNeil, “Trusting Description: Authenticity, Accountability, and Archival Description Standards”, Journal of Archival Organization, Volume 7, Issue 3, July 2009 , pages 89 – 107. (available through library ORR)

NOTE: Of special note for individuals interested in preservation/conservation are MacNeil’s consideration of the need to keep good documentation of all conservation treatments and the need to integrate this documentation into other description tools provided for archival records.
